The museum will accept it as a donatio. But probably won't buy it. I would get it appraised at a shop somewhere

I agree with the above statement. An appraisal will tell you what it's worth, but the museum most likely wouldn't purchase it from you

Best bet is to check with antique shops and pawn brokers. Museums will accept donations especially if it helps complete one of their collections. A good way to go is to have the item appraised and certified for that value then donate it to the museum and write off the value against your taxes.
