It changed hands a few times over its history. They offer a tour that is very interisting if you are into history. And a nice boat ride.

It was to start with but the confederacy waited them out and allowed the union forces to leave after a horrendous bombardment.

Yes, it was a Union base. Then, a Confederate base. And then taken by the Union again. And then, a US federal base until after World War II
