Fort Sumpter was where the 1st shots or battle occurred of the Civil War. Before war was actually declared. The Confederate troops (Southern) laid seige to the fort, held by Federal soldiers (Northern). It's kinda what started it all. The fort was still under construction when all this occured. It was pretty heavily destroyed, during the weeks of near constant bombardment.
