I believe to go south to Atlanta you have to depart from Raleigh or Wilson, NC. The Raleigh to Charlotte train ends in Charlotte.
I know there is an Amtrak express twice daily between Charlotte and Raleigh with stops along the way. This train does not have a sleeper car with bedrooms. Charlotte is located on a main line between New Orleans and New York city. I would assume you could get a sleeper car going south to Atlanta or New Orleans or North as far as New York City.
