Picture books are excellent for any age to teach higher level thinking. Illustrators show emotions and details which help people step into the story and become part of it.

It's appropriate for all ages...a lot of people think books aimed at a toddlers/preschooler aren't good for older age groups but even as ahhh adult I love reading early readers and picture books in addition to young adult literature and adult novels. And the same can go for ya books...it could depend upon the reader's mentality and maturity. If your 8 year old is enough let them explore ya. My best to is to use your judgement as a parent
