French aristocrat, Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, who held many senior positions in the American forces during the American War of Independence. He also helped Benjamin Franklin write the Declaration of the Universal Rights of Man and of the Citizen. Was also a key figure in the French Revolution and later in the July revolution of 1830.
