Is it true that the star spangled banner poem was written there? Just wondering because I have been traveling with my family and we're going to be coming there on Monday from Knoxville TN.

This is definately worthwhile. As others said, the attack on the fort inspired the star spangled banner. The author witnessed the attack on the fort from a ship in the harbor and was unsure at dawn who's flag was flying over the fort, meaning who won the battle. Spoiler alert, the rest is history.

Many are answering it was written as the diet was under attack. It was written the morning after. Francis Scott key was on a prisoner ship sent there by the Americans to negotiate a prisoner exchange (1 for 1). He was told that the British would still honor that agreement but it's all for not over 100 naval ships are in the be or and will all attack the fort. FSK was upset because the fort although a military fort, was mostly women and children. The British Commander stated that word was given that Id they took down the flag from the pole that would symbol a surrender and the bombardment would immediately stop.the flag itself was hot several times directly but never fell not was it take down. FSK kept running from the deck to below to keep the men informed. They always asked the same question.." is the flag still there?" They also preyed throughout the night to the effect of GOD please let the flag still fly. The next morning as the flag still flew but rather at a slight angle,

HMS Minden saw service during the War of 1812 in the Chesapeake Bay.  Accounts state that Francis Scott Key was aboard Minden when he wrote the poem "Defense of Fort M'Henry", which became the lyrics for "The Star-Spangled Banner. HMS Minden was Ganges Class 74 gun frigate built at Bombay Dockyard in 1810 or so in India. Sir Francis was on the ship when it was bombing the harbour during the war with Britain when .After a night of Bombing, when Francis saw the American flag flying high on the fort he wrote the above poem.. This is the Indian connection to the American National Anthem
