The stories about the murder of the Reed family on December 4th, 1848 are varied. Some say that it was bandits while others have claimed that they were killed by British pirates. But it is certain that Reed's boasting of large sums of gold, buried on site, brought about the death of eleven people. The listed names associated with the murders are Joseph Peter Lynch (an army deserter); Peter Raymond (escaped convict and murderer); Peter Quinn and Peter Remer (British deserters); and Sam Bernard. After the bodies were discovered, a posse was formed. Confronted south of Santa Barbara, those that weren't killed outright were put on trial and hung on December 28th, 1848.
