It depends what the error message is, most likely it's an ink issue. If you don't use it often enough the ink dries and clogs the nozzles. Your printer's maintenance menu has procedures for this. One of the reasons ink is so expensive is that there's cleaners and lubricants in the ink too, so regular use takes care of most issues. If the printer head is actually damaged, your best bet is a new printer. This is because most printers cost less than the ink to refill them, so repair just isn't worth it. Unless you need color, I'd go with a laser printer. While more expensive up front, there's less maintenance and the cost per page is significantly lower.
