For the most part the water is clean...So to answer the question Are there leeches in the water? NO there is no leeches in the water. Also to agree with the local guide You are NOT allowed in the water. That's up to you if you wish to get your feet wet.
Definitely not recommend goin in the water, any parts, regardless of what it looks like.
I do not touch the water...the paths are great for bikes and running (not alone)
