If we renew our membership does it add on a year from the date we do renew or 1 year from the end of our old membership? In other words do we shorten our old membership by paying early?

Correct, your renewal date does not change. Renewing early is a matter of convenience and a way to ensure there's no gap in your membership.

From the end of your initial year. Will not shorten membership if you renew early is my understanding.
