Unless you are part of the cause of why the patient is there, (like a husband who abused his wife and she is admitted as a result so the husband wouldn't be allowed to have contact with her) they can receive letters from day one. Staff will open it in front of her to make sure there's no contraband in it, Then she can take it. The mail tends to be slow getting there, and the mail doesn't come on Saturdays.
