There is a small play area outside (good for running and brief climbing, but not a playground), and an indoor small nature center (check open hours), with some exhibits, taxidermy, and a few short videos. And of course the hiking is relatively easy with nice views. I wouldn't say it would entertain for a whole afternoon, but there are things to do for a shorter trip.
Check for a class, register in. Then when done at hemlock bluffs, right across the creek (taking kildaire farm rd back toward Cary) make the first left to go to Ritter Park, entrance of which is just up the road on left. There's a nice play area! And if they have scooters, a level asphalt path thru that isnt too long that winds through park.
The nature center does have group classes both indoors and outdoors. The instructors are excellent - enthusiastic and expert in their subjects. My kids went to many classes. Our.Scout groups also participated. Check the Cary Town website for details.
There are a few things to do as others have stated, and I do really enjoy this place. But my kids are almost identical in age to what you are asking and I find it very difficult to entertain them there longer than 30 minutes. Perhaps if there was a structured activity it would go over better.
I agree with Hamilton Falk. The park is a great way to spend a maximum of a couple of hours with kids of any age.
Great trails for kids with many informative plaques. Also an indoor building with many outdoor programs throughout the year.
