It was bad manners in the 1800s to wear your hat when sitting. No hats at the table!

It is poor etiquette for a gentleman to ever wear a head covering under the cover of a building, porch or enclosure. The only exception would be for a religious head cover-- kippah--kufi--patka/pagri--or actual keffiyeh.
