Free primitive camping with limited cell coverage. I have T- mobile and a friend had Verizon. Verizon worked and T-Mobile did not. I found a place next to a small creek with a fire ring. It was perfect for 1st time camping!!
The primitive camp site that only has pit toilets I go too is $5 per night, others have different rates. Info is on web site.
Some places you can camp for free just know you won't have a bathroom or water at your campsite they have campgrounds in uwharrie where you have to pay a small fee but you have a bathhouse with shower and water and power at your camp site all really depends how you want to camp. They do have bathrooms around if you don't pay you just have to walk or drive to them

I found an opening in the side of the road and camped in my car. It was free. No bathrooms or water though. Just woods. This was between Bardin and Boat Launch near Arrowhead campground.
Once you pay the $5 per day trail access, you can camp anywhere. Car, tent, camper.... whatever you can drag along with you on the trails.
