It may be better to stay near the harbor. It is about a 30 to 45 minutes drive from 6 flags of America. Try to be at flags around 7am before it gets crowded!
Yes I agree definitely stay at the harbor. Safe area as well, there was plenty of police and security driving around. I stayed at the Wyndham which has very nice accommodations.
We stayed at the harbor, in particular the Hampton Inn and Suites. They were very accommodating and provided a full breakfast.
I would definitely stay at the Harbor as there are lots of restaurants, shopping, and entertainment steps from all the hotels. There are several hotel choices depending on your budget.
