The way they treat people doesn't make anyone feel like a person. You have to go there knowing what you want and have most of your paper work. Because you can be there all day and/or have bad experience. So have a relaxing state of mind even when you know it's not right just to get what you need. Just know your rights because they can make the beast come out of people when you feel like all hope is lost.
Before coming to the office, call and ask what documents are needed to apply for public assistance. The welfare has bilingual workers to help clients who do not speak English as their first language.
