As a visitor, yes u can. You have to put it in a locked locker downstairs before you get to go see the inmate. But as a inmate all your books have to be purchased from an online store that can be documented with a receipt. But the catch is you can only have three on your person at any given time. Once you have three plus books the have to be sent down to your property until u are released.
