Do I need an appointment to authenticate a document or do I go directly to the consulate; they do this that same day or do I have to leave the document?

On the Consulate Page you make the appointment and there possibly you will process the Miami DIA.

You have to make an appointment, and the procedure is carried out the same day, the appointments are scheduled through the consulate's website.
