Blowing Rock is VERY safe. It's a small mountain town with very little crime. We hope you visit soon!
Like any public area, you should keep aware of your surroundings but I would definitely say it's a safe place to visit. Be prepared to do a lot of walking, lots of steps to and from city parks, retail stores, restaurants....this is a mountain town.

When I visited in October/November 2018, my biggest fear was getting hit by a car due to the thick fog. My general feel was that it that the worst crime normally seen is the occasional speeding ticket.
Yes, there quite a few places to eat, shop, and have fun in the area.
