Yes you will have time, I would go to the gate for your connecting flight to check the status before getting something to eat or looking around
We flew in on American and flew out American @ clt with a 45 minute layover and had plenty of time....mind you, we didn't stop other than a restroom break getting to out gate. ... I wouldn't try to hit a restaurant while in route
It should be enough time as long as your flight arrives on time. It may be tight. I usually like no less than an hour for connections. You need to get to the tram and go to the next terminal then find your gate. You won't have time to eat in between though. I do no less than 1.5 or 2 hours in between if I want to get something to eat. Big airport. Much like a shopping mall. On our last flight we went American and came in at Terminal F, left out of Terminal :C.
I just came through CLT twice and I assure you that 51 minutes is more than sufficient to connect from one end to the other, just understand which gate section you are arriving and which you are leaving by checking a map of CLT before your trip, there are also airport maps in the AA magazine in the seatbacks onboard every AA flight.
It depends at which airport you are arriving and whether you are flying into an international or domestic port. Generally booking thru customs takes time. I gather you are flying domestic routes, whereupon you luggage, if any, will be booked thru depart airport to eventual arrive airport, however the distance between hubs might necessitates bus or train airport transport. I would be more comfortable with more time in case of late departures and late arrivals at changeover hub. Generally a good booking agent will allow enough time. However, more travellers book themselves and do not allow enough time..
Where is your layover?
