We 'suited up' in our van in the carpark before entering, which worked well. By the end of the evening, our feet felt cold after walking on the cold ice chipped ground. Some people had sleds to pull their kids along on. I can't imagine they'd prohibit backpacks.

Yes you can take a small back pack in if you absolutely require one. but u won't require extra clothes. This place is well maintained and there are lot of employees inside if you need any sort of help.
You can, but the Icecastle takes about an hour or two to tour. The parking lot is close to the Icecastle so you can easily walk to your car if you need anything.
