No attacks of any kind here! This is about as real of a park/place to see animals and birds in their natural environment, unimpeded by fences or any staff. It is FREE, self guided, no frills, vending machines or anyone to tell you what to do, or what not to do! Alligators do walk out on the trails, not to eat you, but to sun themselves. Wait until they move, or take a different trail if they refuse to move, which may be the case. I have seen every animal we have here, including panther (mountain lion) Florida has no true Florida Panthers anymore due to mountain lions being brought into our area years ago to diversify the genetic pool of the true Florida Panthers, which now are all hybrid cats, with Texas genetics. This place is nice, off the beaten path, please respect it by leaving only your footprints, and taking only memories! :-)
The first mile or so is ok. However, If you're truly inexperienced and uncomfortable, I would not suggest going alone, beyond that. No water, no facilities, no cell phone reception. Take someone with you. If you're smart and safe, it is absolutely amazing out there.
When we were there in December there was a bear that would not get off the trail. A man that regularly visits was on the trail when we were and always comes with an air horn and a machete. He was warning everyone(the ones that didnt here the air horn) as he walked out to be very careful.
And if you're worried about bears wear a bell or somethimg else like keys that make noise as you walk. Gators leave you alone if you leave them alone
There has never been an Alligator attack there, however a woman was chased up a tree by a 12 footer after bringing her small dog with her. She had to be helicoptered out. Never bring dogs or small children to the Swamp. Also, the trail is 12.75 miles long, bring lots of water, and a hiking stick. Otherwise, you shouldn't have a problem. It's the most beautiful trail I've ever seen!
