No. Getting the REAL ID is just paper work. Take your birth certificate, SS card, mail with current address (pge or bank) .. See the list on ca.dmv.gov
To piggyback, after you fill out online application you will go wait in line outside, no online appointments currently except for behind the wheel tests. They will verify your info, then you wait in line to get a number. Once you have a number and you are screened you can go inside. Ensure you have looked at all requirements and have the original papers even if you uploaded them with the application.
