If you need assistance, the red cap personnel should be available during boarding. Amtrak staff make rounds on the train, also.
Bring food, books, iPads to keep yourself and your child company and fed. If you do coach, food is not free, so plan accordingly. A 'sightseer' car is usually available to view the outdoor landscape and to stretch out. This route will almost definitely require a transfer in Chicago between the Southwest Chief & Lakeshore Limited trains, so pack light if possible as you may have to carry your own luggage between trains.
Assuming you're in coach, bring some blankets and a tablet or or laptop with pots of movies download. The ride is comfortable and you'll switch trains in chicago. If you plan to check bags, arrive in KC by 640am. Train usually loads at 715am. Also, you can bring your own food if you dont want to spend too much money in the dining car.
Awesome!! Thanks for the help. I do have a couple of questions to ask. (I'm a planner) 1. Do we get a room to sleep in for ourselves? 2. Can we get up and walk around, I'm afraid my son will get tired of sitting down for hours on end. 3.In chicago, do you advise leaving the station to eat? My boyfriend will be with me and he wants to eat chicago pizza. 4. My son has a facination with trains, can he meet the conductor or atleast get to see where the conductor is? 5. What happens during a transfer? Is it like grey hound where you just keep you bags with you and board the next bus when they call for you, or do you have to go somewhere to check your luggage in. 6. How many bags can we have? Is there a limit number or a weight capacity? 7. Does the train and/or train station have wifi?
