If you have a large group it's advisable to let them now when you want to go you can make appointments and pay ahead. But mostly you can just walk in.
They do have timed entry, but as long as they're not full, you can just walk in. If you want to guarantee your entry, you can purchase tickets online which will designate an entrance time. We were there in the afternoon recently and it was relatively quiet.
No need to make reservations. If you have a large group or have special needs they have docents that can help with advance notice.
You can buy your tickets in advance, if that's what you mean.
