There seems a bit of confusion between titles and vehicle registration cards. If your car is financed, there is a title lien, the lien holder (lender) may keep the title until the lien is satisfied. The vehicle registration is the one you MUST PRESENT TO POLICE on demand. If your former tag from trade in is being transferred to the new vehicle, bill of sale is normally sufficient until the transfer is complete. The length of time that is good for should be 15 to 30 days, and may vary. Best to check with the dealership until they give you your registration card. Be persistent, and keep your bill of sale with you while driving. The title likely will be mailed to you when your finance contract is paid off.
When I got a car, a guy from dealership got a title few days later. So you don't get a ticket. Just get a title before that licence plate expired.
