Yes, I've had this done in the past.
Im not sure on this since I am not a dentist. I have had a rootcanal before. The only way to get to the root is through the inside of the tooth. The crown has to be removed to get to the root. They clear all the inside of the tooth out of the decay. Then they put a crown ontop to finish it off.
