Hi Mathew, Great question. The karat of gold defines it’s purity which leads to how much it’s worth. For example, 10 karat gold is 41.7% pure gold whereas 18 karat gold is 75% pure gold. The karat of gold means the percentage of gold. If you have 10 grams of 10 karat gold, then theres only actually 4.17 grams of gold. The rest would be other metals like copper, nickel, zinc, etc. If you have 10 grams of 18 karat gold, that would be 7.5 grams of gold. The higher the karat, the more gold content.
