I'm sorry to say, it is gone. No one will be allowed back there for a very long time. It was the epicenter of a very large fire that is still burning out of control. Last I heard, it was at 4700 acres.
Do not attempt to hike into the hot springs around the closure. The road and mountain ground is unstable. Falling rocks and ground slides are a hazard to your health. There were several near-miss events as firefighter crews were working on the fire. For the latest update call the local McKenzie Ranger Station. They will have the best information.
Cougar hot springs is going to be closed for a year or longer. A fire started there last Sunday 8/19/18 while people were soaking in the am. All the man made structures are gone and lots of debris in the hot springs.
