I don't think this is likely (at all), but do they sell kittens? If not, maybe, baby rabbits/bunnies or even chicks? Thanks!

No cats, no bunnies, yes chicks but only on season

in California it's illegal for pet shops to "sell" cats, dogs, and rabbits, unless they are up for adoption by a rescue or shelter through the shop.

I saw only chicks. The bunnies were all gone. You should check the shelters for a kitten. The Front Street Shelter has adoption deals often.
