To answer both questions, in the rear of the B&N store is the children's section. My children 4-7 yrs, look around all books, but when they go there they like the children's sections. There is a corner of the section with toddlers level books, and on the other side with the "tree" and reading area, there are more higher-level reading with computer and technical books, science books, all your STEM books. History books are also close by. As far as literary works like classics, are also around this half of the children's section. The other side has Disney books, Dr. Seuss and other books similar to that genre. So in short, one side has mostly fictional books and young reader books. The other side (tree side) has more non-fiction and advanced reading books.
What type of reading? Fiction, thrillers, drama, romance, etc. There's many flavors to choose from in different genres. There is something for just about everyone.
The Percy Jackson series is very popular.
It really depends on what they like to read and their reading level, 2nd grade probably Dr.Suess or "When you give a mouse a cookie" type of books
