4-wheel drive vehicles can have the effect of giving over-confidence while driving in the snow. 4-wheel drive does not help a vehicle to come to a stop. Similarly, traction control does not help a vehicle come to a stop. They both work to allow the driver to maintain control while moving. Any vehicle with anti-lock brakes will be able to stop better in the snow than one without.
From owning one for years (almost 500,000 miles) I recommend Subaru but don't know if they have that make.
