Because employers and workers didn't like having a holiday in the middle of the week. People like having three or four days weekends. At first, it was two holidays on the nearest Mon or Fri. Then it was combined and called President's Day. But some (like schools) still observes two holidays usually called Lincoln's birthday and President's Day.
Yep...me too. They changed the dates years and years ago. Now we "celebrate" their bdays on different days than we did as kids. Something to do with standardized holidays? Or 3 day weekends?
