Yes, you can, even if you're a little overdue. Just bring your renewal notice, AAA membership card, and ID with you. They're also open on Saturdays but check with your local AAA to confirm. It's so much easier and convenient than going to the DMV.
Yes. As an AAA member you may use the convenient services of their in house CA-DMV. Most all services except for Driver Licenses. They are great!!

Yes, you can pay & pick up your tags, plates, DP plates or placards all at the same time. The dedicated DMV desk can handle any transaction you would do at the DMV office. The only thing they can't work with is, out of state transactions.
AAA will do the paperwork and I think you can pick them up as well, if not they will be mailed to uou.
New ones?, you can take all your documents to AAA and then DMV sends to your home
