If they are deemed competent and is voluntary they can apply for discharge. A doctor has 24 hours to approve the discharge. If the pt is deemed incompetent or a harm to self and others 2 doctors will sign paperwork for the pt to stay until stable.
They have to sign a 48/72 hour letter and they'll be discharged after that time spand unless they seem a harm to themselves or others.
