It took 6 hours for us. Actually they are committed to go as far as they spot the whales. Our steamer took 2 and half hours to reach the spot and spend around 1 hour there and it was a rare experience to see whales. We returned fully satisfied.

3 is about right. Just depends on where the whales start showing activity as to how far out you go and how much time is spent traveling.
