Additional information to Jennifer Brusca's: After the 72 holding period of waiting for the animal to be claimed, if they are unclaimed, they will be "Evaluated For Adoption". If they are deemed "adoptable", and if the shelter has the space to house them, they will be put up for adoption. If the animal is deemed "unadoptable" for any reason, or if they do not have the space to house the animal, the animal is killed.
When a dog or cat is brought to the shelter, it is checked to see if it has a chip, which will help to find the owner. If it doesn't have one, there is a process the animal goes through prior to adoption: testing for diseases, assessing behavior/well being, vaccinating, and neuter/spay if necessary. Sometimes, dogs or cats are better off in a foster home prior to adoption. This helps them to socialize and/or get physically or emotionally well prior to adoption.
They are put up for adoption.
