There are bobcats and mountain lions, but no bears. I saw a herd of wild boar last weekend, and there are plenty of deer.
Is there Horse Camping at Henry Coe Park?
No bears, bur there are deer :).
Im a little surprised there are no bears in the park. I remember when there were none in desolation. Then one night there was. There is no reason to be concerned as long as you keep a clean camp.
"Extirpated" is the term applied to the California State Mammal, 'Ursa horribilis.' It used to be common, and scary, and Coe Park was very satisfactory habitat for the species. No child old enough to operate a gun was ever allowed out of its parents' sight without one... which is one reason every single one was killed off within the state's boundaries (and that is what extirpated means). The species is not extinct, but the mystique lumbers on. Pigs are the most problematic species these days, partly because of their numbers and size (up to 400 pounds), and their bad tempers. The mountain lion is the deadlier, but they are very uninterested in showing themselves to humans. Make some noise and the pigs will usually take off. Truly, the most deadly animals are the mosquito, the tick, and the flea, vectors for West Nile fever, Lyme disease and some unlovely others, and bubonic plague or Hantavirus. The great predator species look very innocent by comparison.
No bears here. Just few deer and probably frogs during the night.
No bears.
No the bears have long since left this region.
