After closing last year following a high-profile ownership change that involved Oakland Raider Marshawn Lynch, the beloved soul food spot is seeing new life — this time in San Leandro. The new location, named Scend’s II, is a more streamlined version of the former flagship on San Pablo Avenue, good news for folks who missed the kitchen’s fried seafood dishes over the last few months. According to an employee at the restaurant on Friday, the new Scend’s quietly opened on March 14. The original restaurant, located on the border of Oakland and Emeryville, gained national attention last year when word spread Lynch was interested in taking the space over once its 80-year-old chef-owner, Cassie Nickelson, retired. A liquor license transfer from Nickelson to Lynch was filed in February and is still pending. About two decades ago, Nickelson was running a catering business out of her apartment in Oakland. Maybe with the new Scend’s up and running, this could be a sign Lynch is making progress
