Liberty Orchards began as an apple farm founded by Mark Balaban and Armen Tertsagian. When they grew more apples than they could sell, they used the excess fruit to create their own version of a candy called "locoum" which they had enjoyed as children. They called the confection "Aplets," and it quickly became a hit with the locals here in the Cashmere valley. As the candy business grew and grew, Liberty Orchards transitioned to a candy company full-time in 1920.

I too think Liberty Orchards is the founder. I hope someone can definitely confirm for you. We actually did the tour and I am thinking it had been discussed but just can't remember for sure. Sorry!
