Both of those are great entry level dirt bikes. One thing that's great about those is that they actually come with a warranty and some piece of mind. If you are looking to avoid a manual clutch, this is the largest engine you can get. Go sit on some and good luck!
I would say that's the best option also. Most new riders dump there first bike within a year. So buying a new bike is generally a bad idea. As for as which model to buy have him sit on the bike and see which he's comfortable on. I'm a Honda guy but my buddies all ride Yamahas.
I would suggest a used 125 for a first bike. Very cheap and durable.
