Thats just the officer on a power trip...flexing his nuts. He just wants an excuse to make your day horrible. They usually are all like that. If you got a clean record, i suggest you file a complaint on the officer for harrassment. And the proper "wording" when you refuse a search is: "No, I do NOT consent to an unlawful search, But OBVIOUSLY Im going to cooperate." Theres no way around it, but at least its verbalized in a polite way that you are not agreeing with him.
