As of 7/27/19 you don't. I just spoke to a park ranger and she said you don't need to make a weekend reservation. It was only in affect for 4th of July weekend so maybe check around holiday times.
Yes, per the Santa Clara county parks website reservations are required fri-sun to picnic and to hike. Parking is super limited, and to get to the park you have to travel down a one lane road through private property. It's best to give the site a look. It's a long drive to get turned around.
reservations are not required but are recommended. i frequent here often and have never made a reservation. one out of five times the park is unexpectedly closed or the lots are full. i love morgan hill though so I dont mind being re routed.

We got lucky on a slow Saturday, and there was plenty if parking. Still paid 6 dollars to park. The reservations are required otherwise, and it would be a bummer to get turned around after the drive.
