Actually this area is located 40 miles north of Long Beach..and I'm sure a telescope is probably better in the evening sky to look at. I'm no expert with telescope but looked thru a telescope a couple of times in the deseret & mountains. Surely a great experience for me & I'm sure your granddaughter will have a great time with her Christmas present from Santa.
This site is still pretty low elevation to get clear of much light pollution, going up Angeles Crest Highway 2 will be a bit better, the milky way can be visible at higher elevation at night, though the temperatures get quite low up high this time of year! Otherwise out to the desert would be a significantly better experience, but a bit of a drive depending on where you go—could be 2 hours+.
