Its not a National Park its a State park. There are no frills other than mother nature. No electricity no generators allowed. But it is one of the most beautiful palaces in maine
It's beautiful year round. I think most of the park is accessible by foot in the winter and you have to have a special license to climb. I hike in spring and summer because the days are longer and I usually check the weather beforehand but weather on the mountain is unpredictable. All in all I think it's worth it to visit. My favorite place in Maine.
It is definitely worth seeing, not touristy its down to earth beauty. Weather is totally up to the season.
Definitely recommended for true back to nature experience. June thru August (less black flies)
Baxter State Park is A state park, not national. I personally love the fall with the autumn foliage. However, if you enjoy snowmobiles, winter is your time; however, you will need to stay at a motel, etc., outside the park.
I recommend fall to visit baxter. I would recommand a mini suv owing to narrow, two way muddy roads (connecting various camping grounds and hiking trails). I would recommand a very well loaded camping aids.
Great for hiking and enjoying nature
If you like the rugged outdoors. This is your park. There are several parking lots but you a need a permit. Sign up and get there early because the lot we used filled quickly. If you're not afraid of heights or like a challenge take the knife edge trail. I hiked it late summer and the weather was slightly temperamental especially at the top. Overall it definitely worth the trip. Regardless of which trail you hike. Also, the people on the trails are friendly and courteous.
Highly recommended as it is a beautiful state park and is the end of the Applachian Trail.
