What are the cost and documents I need to do a name change for my 5 year old. I want to change his last name to his step dad. His real father hasn't been around, and I have full custody.

It will be about a total of $500.00 If you do everything yourself. You can get all the docs on line or go to any courthouse in Cali because the the docs are the same. You mentioned the paternal father isn't around much. The court requires you to notify him of the court date in case he wants to oppose the name change. It's pretty easy but could take a few months.
