We have had an adult cat hanging around our backyard for a week. We have posted his picture on social media sites with no one claiming him. Will animal control come and pick him up or do we need to capture him and bring him to the shelter?

No. Animal control will not come and get him unless he is obviously sick or injured. Feral or neighborhood cats are treated just like any other wild animal. If you have the means to trap him, you can bring him to the shelter on the last Saturday of any month and they will sterilize, immunize, and eat tip him for $10. Then return him to you so you can take him back to his territory. This ensures that the feral/neighborhood cat population is healthy and its growth is kept in check.

Animal control will not pick up a stray cat. Unless you have caught it and it is sick. And it is extremely difficult to get an appointment at shelter on the last day of the month I've been trying for 5 months. They fill up extremely fast.
