Amtrak ticket prices seem to be based more on availability than anything else. As any one train fills up, prices for the remaining tickets on that train go up. Otherwise, I think the actual price of a ticket is the same no matter how you buy it. You should call them though.
Yes it's like the airlines, and online fares are cheaper. Call 1800usarail see if they take a prepaid gift card.
