As long as checked baggage service is available on your route, you can check 2 bags per person up to 24 hours before your departure for free.
Amtrak suggests you get to your station an hour early but call & make sure your train is running on time. If it's not a major station I go half hour before & check my luggage.
As long as someome is there, they will take it, usually at least an hour early
